On October 21st the tour de Valley weekend of cycling took the roads of Southern Gold Coast. The 1.2 km circuit provided a unique opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of racing with scenic views. There was 6 divisions of races with great prizes on offer.

The Celebrity Cruiser Challenge ride took place along the Musgrave Street, Kirra, commencing at 10.30am with approximate race time of 10 minutes around the 1.2 circuit.

Participants raced on cruise bikes, supplied by local bike shops, and came dressed in appropriate ‘beach’ attire to fit with beachside location and the unique Southern Gold Coast style.

Timezone Gold Coast was the official sponsor for a fun Kids on 2 Wheels activity for kids from 3 -12 year old. The kids were encouraged to bring their bikes and take part in a fun ride on the road.

In spite of the rain, the kids were eager for a fun race.

All participants received a medal and a 2 hour funpack from Timezone Gold Coast for their effort.

Unfortunately due to the weather Powie’s appearance was cancelled and Timezone’s marquee was not erected.

Local businesses were given the opportunity to sponsor a celebrity in partnership with the bike shop for a fee of $250 to be donated to the Amy Gillett foundation. The foundation endeavours to reduce the death and injury of bike riders nationally.

The following Sunday was the 36 km Solo Time Trial, 72km or 36 km Team Challenge in the beautiful Currumbin Valley. The scenic Flat to undulating ride that follows Currumbin Creek on its journey from Mount Cougal National Park provides a perfect setting for such an event and is the proposed course for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games trial.

The Tour de Valley is very much about promoting cycling in the community and put Southern Gold Coast on the forefront on a global level.
