Coolangatta’s Beach Volleyball Courts was host to a nationwide event as the U23 Volleyball National Championships hit the Southern Gold Coast from the 20th till the 22nd of January 2017.

128 athletes from Queensland, Australia and New Zealand flocked to the region to battle it out on the sand.

Connecting Southern Gold Coast (CSGC) CEO, Peter Doggett, said it was a coup for the Southern Gold Coast to host the U23 Beach Volleyball National Championships and continue to attract high calibre athletes ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“It’s fantastic to see the Coolangatta Beach Volleyball courts that were installed earlier this year putting the region on the map as first class beach volleyball venue,” said Mr Doggett.

Five Time Beach Volleyball Olympian, Gold and Bronze medallist, Natalie Cook, said events like this were necessary to encourage future athletes to the sport.

Iconic beaches such as Coolangatta are a breeding ground for success and events such as this one will inspire thousands of kids to kick their shoes and socks off, and get active on the sand.

It was also a great opportunity to give the local community a free event to watch and enjoy.

Several additional events took place across the weekend, like the Surf Volley Nippers Queensland cup that took place on the Friday as well as Corporate Cup set to see the local businesses do battle on the sand, and a local Celebrity Match.

Timezone Gold Coast participated in the Surf Volley Nippers Queensland cup, which was battled out amongst 128 Surf Lifesaving Nippers by giving 2 Hours Fun Packs to each participant.

Timezone Coolangatta will celebrate its first birthday on the Sunday 26th of February and to participate in these events is important to establish itself in the Southern Gold Coast Community.

The Coolangatta Beach Volleyball Courts are an initiative of Connecting Southern Gold Coast and are proudly presented by The Strand Coolangatta.
